Neuropathic Pain

Neuropathic pain medical cannabis treatment

Neuropathic pain is caused when nerves that carry sensations to the brain are affected by a health condition, or if the nervous system is damaged or malfunctions for any reason. While conventional approaches and licensed medications offer relief for a lot of those with neuropathic pain, medical cannabis and cannabis based medicines have emerged as a new, and popular, treatment amongst those who are yet to find relief with treatments traditionally used by the NHS.

A guide to cannabinoids for neuropathic pain

Cannabinoids come in two distinct groups. First up, we have our own endocannabinoids, which are created naturally in the body.  These endocannabinoids act as neurotransmitters, sending signals to receptors throughout the entire human body, including the nervous system.

Can terpenes offer relief from neuropathy?

Although most of the clinical research and media attention has focused on cannabinoids (such as THC and CBD), the other compounds found in the cannabis sativa L. plant, such as terpenes, are starting to gain recognition for their potential therapeutic benefits.

A guide to CBD and neurological disorders

A rapidly growing body of research studies emphasises the safety and effectiveness of cannabidiol (CBD) in alleviating symptoms associated with neurological conditions. CBD not only offers general benefits for overall wellness and improved sleep, but it also possesses specific properties that target the symptoms of a wide range of neurological disorders. Consequently, individuals with neurological disorders are increasingly interested in exploring how CBD can enhance their overall health and well-being.

A word from our specialist

"Neurological conditions are many and varied in how they can affect us. The more recognised conditions that are treatable with medical cannabis include epilepsy, where CBD mimics the action of the many anti-epileptic drugs; and multiple sclerosis, which the NHS can prescribe Sativex for. Medical Cannabis offers greater flexibility in the delivery of cannabinoid therapy for these conditions and hope in other areas of neurology, such as in the neurodegenerative conditions and the motor disorders."

Can medical cannabis be used to treat neuropathic pain symptoms?

There are over 100 different types of peripheral neuropathy, and so symptoms of neuropathic pain can largely vary. Depending on the type of neuropathic pain, it can sometimes feel like a stabbing or burning sensation, and at other times the pain can feel more tingly or numb - but it is often persistent, and debilitating to deal with.

In the UK, adults struggling to manage the symptoms of neuropathic pain with conventional licensed treatment options may be considered eligible for cannabis-based treatment plans, however, unfortunately many are unaware of this.

At Releaf we offer bespoke, personalised medical cannabis treatment plans for patients with treatment resistant neuropathic pain, and our team of specialist consultants are well versed, and qualified, in using cannabis-based medicines to treat different types of pain, including nerve pain.

Emerging evidence suggests that cannabis-based products may be useful in managing neuropathic pain because of the way they are absorbed by the body. When they enter the body, cannabis compounds like THC and CBD can enter the endocannabinoid system, which is responsible for regulating pain responses.

Once inside this system, these cannabinoids can influence the brain’s perception of pain, and for some, reduce the intensity of pain sensations. This is why specialist doctors, for example those that work for private medical cannabis clinics like Releaf, can prescribe these options to people who have been unable to get the same results using licensed options.
