Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis medical cannabis treatment

Multiple sclerosis causes the immune system to attack the protective layer that surrounds nerve cells, damaging their ability to receive messages efficiently, and sometimes the nerves beneath them. This can cause stiffness, spasms and chronic pain, but recently, evidence shows medical cannabis MS treatments can have a beneficial effect on these symptoms.

Multiple sclerosis and therapeutic cannabinoid treatment

The medicinal cannabis landscape is shifting in the United Kingdom, and with this shift comes increased options for people suffering from multiple sclerosis. MS, unfortunately, currently has no cure. And as the symptoms are so wide-ranging, the treatment options are focused on managing the different symptoms and attempting to slow down or stop further possible damage. There truly is no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to treating MS. Research into both THC and CBD has shown promise when it comes to the reduction of symptoms related to MS.

A thorough guide to medical cannabis for MS

While cannabis is still classed as a Class B controlled drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, in November 2018, the laws surrounding medicinal cannabis shifted in the UK. After decades of lobbying by patient advocacy organisations, doctors, and scientists, medicinal cannabis was finally made available on prescription for patients suffering from certain conditions, with multiple sclerosis (MS) making it on the list.

A comprehensive guide to cannabidiol and neurological disorders

Neurological disorders. Varied, potentially devastating, and hard to group into one easy-to-digest category. They are essentially diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system conditions and include epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer's disease and dementia, ALS, Bell's palsy, and a huge range of separate neuromuscular disorders.

Symptoms

Cognitive confusion

Difficulty walking

Fatigue

Issues controlling the bladder

Muscle spasms and stiffness

Numbness or tingling sensations

Problems with balance and coordination

Visual problems

If you are suffering from any of these symptoms, you may have multiple sclerosis. Please speak with your GP to find out more.

Treatment options:

Unfortunately, there is still no cure for multiple sclerosis, but the symptoms can be eased using a number of different treatments, and different options are suited best for different people. Typically, the individual symptoms are treated with pharmaceuticals, disease modifying therapies, and short courses of steroids can be prescribed to speed up recovery, and so often patients are prescribed various types of medication to take at once.

Antidepressants

Benzodiazepines

Carbamazepine

Diazepam

Gabapentin

Physiotherapy

Steroid tablets or injections

A word from our specialist

"Neurological conditions are many and varied in how they can affect us. The more recognised conditions that are treatable with medical cannabis include epilepsy, where CBD mimics the action of the many anti-epileptic drugs; and multiple sclerosis, which the NHS can prescribe Sativex for. Medical Cannabis offers greater flexibility in the delivery of cannabinoid therapy for these conditions and hope in other areas of neurology, such as in the neurodegenerative conditions and the motor disorders."

Can I get medical cannabis for multiple sclerosis pain?

Multiple sclerosis is a lifelong condition that affects the brain and spinal cord. In serious cases, MS can cause disability and reduce life expectancy for patients, and currently there is no cure, but the symptoms of MS can be relieved.

Since their legalisation in November 2018, cannabis-based medicines have emerged as a successful, and accessible, option for treating MS related pain and spasticity for those who are not responding to conventional medications or treatment options.

In the UK, specialist doctors working for the NHS can prescribe a licensed cannabis-based medicine called Sativex to patients with multiple sclerosis to treat their spasticity symptoms. However, in reality, the NHS rarely issues prescriptions for cannabis-based treatments.

But, private medical cannabis clinics like Releaf are able to legally prescribe a variety of different medical cannabis oils and flowers to alleviate a range of MS symptoms, and increasing numbers of MS patients are choosing these options. Medical cannabis MS treatments have shown great promise in relieving pain and spasticity, but also troubles with sleep, concentration, and poor mental health.
